BBC Radio 2 goes silent after Jeremy Vine forced off air for the first time in 20 years due to fire alarm

BBC Radio 2 has shocked listeners after it went silent for the first time in two decades.

During the Jeremy Vine Show on Thursday (overnight in Australia), Broadcasting House – the building in which the station is situated – experienced a fire scare.

Vine was interrupted by the sound of a fire alarm alerting all staff that the building needed to be evacuated.

As an automated voice played in the background, Vine shared what was going on with his listeners.

He said that he, along with all other employees, were being ordered to evacuate the building and wait outside while the alarm was investigated, adding that he would play music in his absence.

However, the airwaves fell silent.

According to The Sun, the station’s back up tapes soon kicked in before Vine returned to air.

”I do apologise, we did just have a proper fire alarm here,” he told listeners.

“There wasn’t a fire but we had the thing that I’ve not had in 20 years where not just one light goes off but two.”

“The orange light which means there could be a fire and then the red light and then the announcement in the studio which looked as if there was one,” he continued.

Vine added that everyone left the building and “stood outside in the sun” only to find out there was “no fire” and they were all able to return to work.

“Because there’s no fire we are going to cancel the item we were doing on cremation,” he joked.

BBCV Radio 6 Music was also affected by the evacuation, with host Lauren Laverne returning to the air to thank fans for their concern.

“Thank you all for the messages, everything is alright in the studio,” she said.

“We had some technical issues there but we are back with you.”
